Synopsis
This time Ivens and Loridan began to work on this monumental project, starting in 1971. Originally planned to be a four-hour film showing life in China after the Cultural Revolution, shooting and editing went into 1975, and became a series of films. This film was financed partly by the French Centre National du Cinéma, and partly by the instruction that Ivens and Loridan gave to Chinese technicians in camera and sound in the course of filming. The twelve parts are composed of: The Oilfield – Ta Ching (84min); The Pharmacy: Shangai (79min);The Generator Factory (131min);A Woman, A Family (110min); The Fishing Village (104min); An Army Camp (56min); Impressions of the City: Shangai (60min);The Football Incident (19min);Professor Tsien (12min);Rehearsal at the Peking Opera (30min);Training at the Peking Circus (18min); Traditional Handicrafts(15min). They filmed for instance a factory for four months, shooting and showing rushes to workers, discussing with them the nature of those images. Yukong has been widely shown, on Tv as well as in cinemas.
