Synopsis
Fresh from its screening at Cannes, Rules of the Game is a documentary classic in the making. Charting a topic close to home for many Australians, this film follows the progress of young job seekers in northern France who embark on a mentoring program at an employment agency. It is a thoughtful, human and, at times, humorous exploration of how the disfranchised youth of today are forced to conform to norms they find hard to comprehend. Drawing from nearly 150 hours of footage, acclaimed husband-and-wife team Claudine Bories and Patrice Chagnard have crafted this film with confidence, skill and compassion. Most importantly, Rules of the Game illustrates how all its subjects are players on a bigger stage, caught in a system that is fundamentally flawed in the first place.
