Synopsis
A short reflexion about prison and sunset in the centre of the European capital city, in that time of day during which things may seem possible. Before night falls prisoners are called by identification numbers and their voices combine in an abstract dimension giving space for an imaginary new life. Sound, as the only perceptible witness of these lives, crosses a physical border between the inside and the outside, between what is near and what is inaccessible., An intense gaze through the window at dusk, listening to sounds, voices, noises and chirps rising from the bottom as evaporating after a daytime activity. Images and sound tell a routine, that we discover as the prison mechanical practice., Avant la nuit stands out as it leads us in a short time, and with rigorous and minimalist style, towards an idea of habit in the drama, managing to incorporate the drama of imprisonment in the dimension of the whole. Through measured camera movements, the focus on the leaves seems to try to get us distracted to then find out that prison and nature are directly related and are part of a single urban scene.
