One in eight Dutch women gets breast cancer. So everyone knows someone in their vicinity who struggles with this life-threatening disease. The area in which a woman is probably at her most vulnerable, her most beautiful, proudest and sexy, becomes a source of despair and rage., For Ingrid, Vicky and Sabrina, breast cancer takes on various forms. Their often tough and painful treatments are an interim stage towards the hoped-for recovery which can turn into the disease again without warning. But their sense of self-esteem is at stake, as well. It has eroded their sense of femininity. They feel damaged and insecure. ‘Awake in a Bad Dream’ shows in a very personal and intimate way how the women and their partners try to get a hold on life again after the diagnosis. Without comment or interviews, the film follows Ingrid, Vicky and Sabrina when they have to face inevitable and painful choices in the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital. How do they pick up the pieces and who helps them do so?
