Synopsis
Ja, a young woman from Cabral, never left in “search for her life” like so many other Cape Verdeans do. She never even left her village. Ja decides to travel around her island, in order to meet women who, like her, are engaged in the Astonishing bodily practice of batuke. In the course of her journey, we discover the women who stay behind and who overcome together, through the artistic expression of batuke, the harshness and sharpness of separation. Characterized by a euphoric pace, Batuke has become primarily a feminine form of expression. Women have replaced the drum by a ball of fabric lodged between their legs, which they hit…
