Synopsis
In April 1945, Bernd Freytag von Loringhoven left the Führerbunker in Berlin 24 hours before Hitler´s suicide. Bernd Freytag is my stepfather. How can he explain his life story to me?
The biography of Bernd Freytag is unusual. He survives the hell of Stalingrad. Later he becomes a witness of the conspiracy of the 20th July 1944 against Hitler. As adjutant to the Chief of the General Staff Guderian he encounters Hitler at the military reunions on a daily basis.
The life story of Bernd Freytag is interesting as he was neither a resistance hero nor a Nazi criminal. Thus the film is challenging the black and white way we are used to be told stories about the Third Reich.
The film is shot in Poland at the Baltic Sea, and in Germany, Berlin and Munich. It employes plentiful archive material of crucial events of the German history of the 20th century.
