Absent Present - One Country. One Family. One Conflict
Director Claire Roggan
Countries Germany, Israel
Duration 80 min
Synopsis
A Palestinian family, living in the heart of Israel. You are born political, you grow up in a political environment. Seven members from three generations of the Jabarine family talk about their lives in a country, that they call their homeland, but where they cannot feel at home. A status, which they call 'absent-present'. The older family members remember their childhood in the Arabic town Umm-Al-Fahm, which until today has no infrastructure. The younger generation feels to be stuck in between two cultures. They always try to not betray their own people by getting in touch with the other side. For all Jabarines politics and the struggle for a Palestinian identity constitutes their setting of daily life. Demonstrations serve as family-reunions. Political conferences become weekly leisure activities. Regular detentions and court trials: normal every-day-routine. Through its very personal approach, the film contributes to an apparently never-ending discourse.
