Synopsis
Michelangelo: Heart and Stone looks inside the great artist, his private life, his feelings, his personality, his relationships, his passions. The film opens with an old Michelangelo in his late eighties, approaching his final days, who destroys the Pietà Bandini. This gesture is so irrational that can be read on different levels: defeat, desperation, fear for death, search for perfection. We move then to the young Michelangelo, starting his career first under the Medici’ patronage, then moving to Rome called by the Vatican to work in the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo’s works and masterpieces are seen through his inner personality, his crisis, his despair. During all his long life he is driven by strong feelings and passions which lead to the greatness and immortality of his art: his love for Tommaso de’ Cavalieri, his special relationship with Vittoria Colonna, his battle against the corruption of the church and his love for democracy.
