Synopsis
In the Penitentiary of the hu small town Vác a theatre group has been working for years, it’s actors are the prisoners. This film aims at showing the world how one can hang onto the redeeming power of art and create theatre under circumstances as disadvantageous as can be, in isolation, where survival itself is a challenge. The prisoners are rehearsing the play The Party by Sławomir Mrożek. The piece walks round being abject and belonging to somewhere, the relativity of good and bad, the causes leading to the sin apropos of a real thought party and the actors’ doubts about that feast. Besides showing the pedagogical effects of theatre Iron Curtain also holds a mirror to the prisoners: they talk about crime and punishment, being cast out, rootlessness, virtue and the effects of the environment and circumstances on one’s personality. While discussing these questions, their personal stories are gradually unveiled.
