Synopsis
Atacama Desert, Northern CL.It’s Campo Esperanza, the village grown around the mine of San José. Here, 33 people have been trapped for two months 700 meters underground after a collapse occurred during their working shift. As Gino sees his workmates coming out one by one like astronauts in a capsule from the bowels of the earth, the city of Copiapó celebrates with swirls of cars and horns. But a cry, first muffled, then louder, clearer and more rhythmical, rises until it covers any other noise: “No somos trenta y tres, no somos trenta y tres!” It’s a small crowd lead by the mine union’s banner. “We are not just thirty-three!” They too, like their workmates, have been swept away by the landslide: the mine closed and they can’t work anymore, they didn’t get our last two months wages, they didn’t receive any employment termination letter, an essential instrument to be able to find a new job.
