Synopsis
'Un peu ecarté du centre ' is a documentary observation on the Wallonian tradition: 'Les Gilles de Binche'. In 2003 the UNESCO proclaimed 'Le carnaval traditionnel de Binche' as a masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. In search of the codes behind this feast, this film documents the story of some of its most loyal actors in a few bars situated in and around the city. For decades the bars accommodate the meeting places for the different folkloristic societies in Binche. Main character is the Italian ex-miner Pepi Campanella who, after 20 years of service in the mines, decided to take over the bar 'Local des Marins', today 37 years ago. It’s a film about a complex tradition, surviving of folklore and the consequences of a very strong ambition to conserve and respect this tradition.
