The Day the World Turned Dayglo
Director Tim Cutler
Countries United Kingdom
Duration 104 min
Synopsis
Three days after 9/11 and the beginning of a five year odyssey by a young English teacher travelling through ten Muslim countries at the height of the century's new conflict.....a journey across borders and onto a trail of empty bottles leading into the bizarre world of Westerners living right at the heart of conservative Islam...
As Western forces escalate their invasions in Iraq and Afghanistan so attacks on foreigners in Muslim lands increases. The very real joy of working with Muslim students and revelations of their daily lives is contrasted with the daily threat against Westerners in the region and the alcoholic dependency and resulting horror of compound life where men too afraid to leave their fortified bases begin to feed on one another.
The story charts a peculiar polar equation-the world of Islam (surrender) versus the McWorld of external dependency.
The film reveals great humanity and friendship but is also a document of tension and fear - the prospect of attack versus the lure of the tax free pay packet .
