around 35000 reang tribal refugees have been staying in tripura since 1997 after fleeing from mizoram due to ethnic violence.as the second largest ethnic group in mizoram the reang leadership felt and also tried to convince the then chief minister lal thanhawla about the necessity of the forming an autonomous district council for reangs in mizoram.but mzp and yma strongly opposed this demand of reangs.tention between two communities escalated. the murder of a mizo forest official fuelled the enmity and an environment of mistrust prevailed there after between the reang and the mizos.however trouble between two communities continued and in groups the reangs fled from their native villages and took shelter in tripura.as citizen of india the bru refugee voters participated various elections including mizoram state assembly election 2008. tripartite discussion were repeatedly held on the modalities of taking back the reang refugees in their own land but no conclusive decision could be taken in the meetings. more than a decade the reangs are living in the six refugee camps of tripura. they are displaced of their own country.
