Synopsis
Vera Mukhina, born in Riga, went to Paris in 1912 to study under Rodin’s pupil Bourdelle. Her monumental, 53 metre-high sculptural ensemble Worker and Peasant Woman, weighing 75 tons, becomes a sensation at the 1937 International Exhibition in Paris. Picasso expresses great enthusiasm of Mukhina’s work. She truly believes in humanist ideals, and this is successfully used by the USSR propaganda machine. On her way back from Paris, the sculptress turns down her family’s property valued at 4 million dollars to avoid possible trouble in Moscow. The film is a diary about an artist’s relations with the State, herself and her work - a theme reaching over the boundaries of time.
