Debut film by the Iranian female poet Granaz Moussavi is about the secret double life that many young people lead in repressive Iran. They can only be themselves and express themselves behind closed doors. The film shows an underground scene in Teheran that is never reflected in the media. The actress Marzieh Vafamehr plays the young actress Marzieh in My Tehran for Sale. Vafamehr also forms the primary source of inspiration for the female poet Granaz Moussavi, who wrote and directed the film. Because her theatre work was banned, Marzieh was forced to lead a secret double life in order to express herself artistically. The Iranian-born Saman, who emigrated to Australia, gives her an opportunity to leave the country. According to Moussavi, she wanted in her debut film to tell the story of her generation, which has learned to live with double morality and with fear and which has to survive with lies and deceit. As teenagers, they were not allowed to be noticeable or wear colourful clothing and they had to behave seriously and obediently. Now they can only be themselves behind closed doors.
