Synopsis
When a young Hungarian woman breaks off a relationship, she realises that her own fate is tangled up with the political drama in which her country finds itself. Ultra-nationalist politicians have manipulated the commemoration of the 1956 revolution in Budapest for their own political gains. They create fear, unrest and riots. In order to conquer her sorrow, the woman starts collecting the stories of passers-by. In these stories, she discovers the soul of the country, which has been determined throughout the centuries just as much by minorities as by the stories of the dominant majority. As a result, the woman comes into conflict with the nationalists, who want to exclude all minorities. Europa, East is a personal, intimate film with dry humour. The stories of passers-by sketch how radical nationalism holds Hungary in its grip.
