Synopsis
”Hidden” is based on an interview with twelve years old
Giancarlo. He lives as a hidden refugee in Sweden. By combining the real interview with animated pictures the directors want to create a level where you can listen to and absorb the story of one refugee child in a new way.
Giancarlo is from Peru and has not got a permit to stay in
Sweden. In “Hidden” he describes what it is like to live hidden and to feel persecuted by the police and others.
Hanna Heilborn and David Aronowitsch made the interview with
Giancarlo in August 1999. It was first supposed to be a small part of a radio-documentary, but Giancarlo’s way of telling his story was so unique. The idea to combine his voice with animation was born. The film travels to Peru and to the school in Sweden but mostly it takes place in the actual room where the interview took place. With the help of an interpreter Giancarlo’s father starts the conversation. In the room is also the mother with a newborn baby and Giancarlo’s little brother. Giancarlo himself sits perfectly still with his arms pressed tightly against his body. He gives a straight answer to every question and in an impeccable Swedish. The characters are built on Mats Johansson’s drawings, which have been animated in 3D. Among these characters are also Hanna Heilborn and David Aronowitsch with their tape recorder, their questions and their inability to explain why Giancarlo is being expelled and not welcome in Sweden. By using documentary sound together with animation the directors want to explore new expressions for subjects we have heard about before. The idea with animation is also to reach a new audience beyond the traditional documentary consumer.
