Synopsis
The path taken by an Indonesian family through the striking contradictions of their country: between the urban and rural environments, between Muslims and Christians, between old traditions and a new world. The Catholic, widowed Rumidja provides the film's anchor in her attempts to adapt to her son's recent conversion to Islam. With the city of Jacarta facing a climate of increasing violence and some of its citizens becoming increasingly fundamentalist, Rumidja dreams of escaping to her birthplace, Java, but knows that the villages there cannot offer her and her young granddaughter very much.
