The Xávega art of fishing was big business on the sandy coasts of central and northern Portugal. Until the sixties, boats took up to 40 oarsmen and worked with 12 yoked oxen. After this these businesses collapsed. In the last few years, men such as João da Murtosa have ordered smaller boats to be made and are trying again.
