Synopsis
There are boys and girls in Portugal who do not have a homeland. They are not Cape Verdean because they have never been to Cape Verde, they are not Portuguese because they speak a different language and their families have different customs from the Portuguese. They do not want to be Portuguese, maybe they want to be Cape Verdean. At the moment they are from Pontinha, Pedreira dos Húngaros, Arrentela, Mirateja, Cova da Moura. They are from the “area”, the “neighbourhood”, not the “niggas”. They have their own boundaries, their own ideals, their language, their particular codes. It is the first time, throughout a common history lasting 500 years, that Africans have created, in Portugal, an assertive, autonomous and avant-garde culture. They are proud.
