Synopsis
The Ganges is the sacred river of India. Varanasi is the city by excellence to meet the river. Shot black and white, this documentary by Gianfranco Rosi (director of Below Sea Level – International Competition), marked an era. It is a film that escapes to the tourist clichés and carries religion mostly to its daily dimension: funerals, ablutions and rules of life. Boatman Gopal Maji is our travel guide and comments with some irony the whirlwind of life and death that surrounds him.
