It is definitely too late to worry about the end of farmers, but something might still be done for the countryside which, caught between the relinquishing of agricultural activity, urbanization, land consolidation and farm enlargement, is losing all subtlety and complexity, and is fading away taking our sense of identity away with it. It may not be too late, provided we raise the question that has been postponed for the last 30 years: what is the aim of agriculture? This is a highly political question, which brings us beyond the agricultural realm and forces us to question our conception of space, territory and community.
