Synopsis
Ilya Kabakov is considered one of the most important contemporary artists worldwide. He grew up in the Soviet Union in the times of Stalin and left the country in the 1980’s. Since then he lives and works in New York together with his wife Emilia. In his Installations and his numerous paintings Kabakov digests the traumatic experiences of his life in poverty and under constraints of a degenerated political system which has not lost its dictatorial structures fully until now. Using his subtle jewish humour he creates in his work a world of its own, which leaves the heaviness of socialist and postsocialist life far behind.
