Synopsis
From within the confines of her caravan, Joelene, (a member of the travelling community) discusses her experiences of prejudice, and of how Gypsy/Roma lifestyles are being eradicated in the UK. As she does so, her children go about their activities; working, playing and squabbling with each other. The audio/visual oscillation between the children’s actions and Joelene’s narratives serves to foreground the humanitarian concerns underpinning social, political & economic ideologies. This spontaneously filmed documentary prompts consideration of issues relating to otherness, difference, race, gender and struggle… The human condition. Joelene is a film about lives being lived and offers an insight into the contradictions, pleasures and conflicts that constitute social histories in the making.
