Synopsis
Muriel, Camille and Bénédicte have left their village in the Swiss canton of Fribourg and have moved to China where their father is setting up a factory. The family settles in the Suzhou Industrial Park, an ultramodern district in a town near Shanghai. The father is submerged in his work, so the mother and her daughters join a class at the university in order to learn Chinese. Here the elder daughters rapidly begin to feel the need to escape from their status as expatriates. Adrift in a world so different from their own, they try to make friends with the Chinese, and realise how different their dreams of independence are from those of the young Chinese people whose main preoccupations are with material success and well-being.
