In Paris, Eric-Maria Couturier, a gifted concert cellist, met Izumi Yamada, a 49 year old Japanese woman in the advanced stages of cancer. At a dinner, they exchanged presents to each other, a meaningful gesture in the Japanese culture. Eric-Maria gave Izumi a very dear and sentimental personal object of his in the form of a fan, and Izumi gave through her daughter's hand a coin of five yen, a symbol for a relationship that has been formed through destiny.
