Synopsis
Documentary film meets art in The Return in which a 90-year-old woman recounts her memories of arriving
on Wellington waterfront in 1908 at the age of two, and growing up in the city. These childhood stories are
filtered by her granddaughter, Wellington filmmaker Kathy Dudding, whose voiceover conversation highlights
intergenerational differences. While archival footage transports the viewer to an historic time, the painterly
video images shot by Dudding reflect her own contemporary, poetic, occasionally quirky vision of the city.
