Valongo's quay - Empress quay - Rio de Janeiro port - Porto Maravilha (wonder port): layers of a city haunted by progress. One port on top of the other. One city on top of the other. To film a city today you have to search beneath and beyond it, simultaneously. The cinematic camera can be an excavation tool, it can excavate multiple invisibilities in space and time, buried and forgotten realms. Emptied urban spaces reveal a political project of capitalistic exploration, that is camouflaged with an idealised discourse of progress that repeats itself over the course of our history.
