Past and present ghosts populate the old quarter of San Berillo., 1958 was the year of legge Merlin, the law that closed down the brothels in Italy. It was also the year San Berillo was razed to the ground and its 30.000 inhabitants rehoused in a new outlying suburban quarter. There is only one small piece of San Berillo left: a black hole at the centre of the city, crossroads of the stories that have passed through it, a mix of myth, legend, popular culture and brothels, and where since 1958 thousands of prostitutes have poured in, giving rise to one of the most important red-light districts of the entire Mediterranean. Year 2000: a raid by the security forces put and end to the forbidden quarter. Once again the inhabitants of San Berillo were forced to abandon their homes., Holly and the other remaining prostitutes live suspended in an urbanistic and temporal paradox. Facing out from the windowed doors onto to the desolateand empty streets, they wait for the few loyal customers they have left to turn up. They all want to leave, but none of them actually manages to do so.
