“The visitor” is a unique cinematic experiment. The whole movie has been created through un-staged improvisations with random encounters on the streets of Mumbai, Shanghai and São Paulo. Without script, with no previous idea of what is going to happen, the filmmaker and her camera woman just threw themselves into some of the hugest cities of the world, trying to pass the borders of fear, anonymity and even identity. Strictly not using words as a tool of communication, the director as “the visitor” manages to get surprisingly close to some of those chance encounters: A cabdriver in São Paulo who lives in his cab since 15 years, Chinese migrant worker, a successful young woman in Shanghai. First simply attendant of their daily life, she becomes an friend and even beloved one who shares their sleeping places and worries. Through this new presence in their life, not only the loneliness of the different people becomes apparent, but, as the relation intensifies, the border between “I” and “the other”, between observer and observed one“ starts to blur.
