In 2008, Eufrosina Cruz Mendoza, a native of the municipality of Santa María Quiegolani in the state of Oaxaca, claimed her right to vote and to run as candidate for Mayor of her community, which right was denied her. Eufrosina’s battle revives the century long historical struggle of Mexican women for the right to vote. More than 50 years after women’s suffrage was won, the contemporary Suffragists are still defending women’s rights, as our society and our political parties still harbor a deep resistance to the participation of women in politics on equal terms
