Gimka and Golka. I was six years old when they came into my life. I was at school and saw them in a book full of photographs meant to teach us about life in Africa: the women get water from the well, the men pray and go hunting. For the pupils party, children wear rabbit ears. This life seemed gorgeous to me. At home in Munich, I could be a mouse in my ballet class "Nutcracker“ or cycle through the vastness of close-by English Garden. But while I was dreaming of our prince charming Ludwig II. and his castle Neuschwanstein, I wished I were in a small and far away village: Almé. And what if I were there for real? “Gimka und Golka und Ich” is about the German film directors encounter with the two protagonists of her favourite childrens book depicting in photographs the life of two little girls in a Cameroonian village. 35 years later, a new poetic story is told sounding the possibilities of transcultural communication.
