‚Blatnyak – this means backyard songs you squeeze out of your soul’, explains Russia’s iconic punk musician Sergey Shnurov. Songs about gangsters, jail, alcohol and drugs; about love, betrayal and death, and above all about the loss of freedom. Songs of ordinary people, reflecting the difficulties of life in the Soviet Union. Sad and desperate, but also loud and anarchical; a testimony both of perseverance and inner emigration. Peter Rippl’s documentary traces a world that seems to have disappeared with the breakup of the Soviet Union – although, back then, everybody had ardently loved the songs of the ‘Blatnoy’, the gangsters and thieves, the songs from the prison and labour camps. Illegally recorded, copied and traded, they had reached the entire country and all social groups.
