An eccentric narrator’s quixotic search for the material traces of Java’s colonial, mystical, and paleontological past, a journey haunted in equal measure by the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora and the still murky events of the 1965 id coup d’état. The film begins with a barrage of stills and then gives ways to contemporary and archival footage from ID, NL, and Britain, with frequent ghostly accumulations of overlaid stills. Convinced of the impermanence of things, yet no longer satisfied with musty books and old photographs, she sets out into the physical world to pursue each of four avenues of inquiry to its logical—if not absurd—end.
