The moon is shining upon a luxuriant garden. Percussion beats interrupt the eerie silence of the night. Bare-chested with crossed-legs, six actors are sitting on mats facing their teachers. It is 4:00 am in Kottakkal, South IN. Close-up on eyes rolling, massaged and oiled bodies, feet stomping the ground, sweaty skins and singers who are vocalizing. During Monsoon season in Kathakali school “PSV Natyasangham”, the training is intensive. In a world where hierarchy is predominant, where women are absent and where religion is omnipresent, Julien in total immersion and miles away from the world he knows is following this very traditional training. From classes to daily routine, we are learning about the cast members and their reality.
