For more than 15 years Vivienne Deane was at the top of Montreal’s jazz scene. She sang with the city’s most talented musicians - Oliver Jones and Vic Vogel among them – and played in the hottest clubs. But well into her career, Vivienne’s real path grew clear – one lit by spirituality and conviction, but also one with a steeper road to success: gospel music. A single mother in tight financial times, a lack of cash is Vivienne’s main obstacle to accomplishing her dream of recording a gospel album. And when arts councils tell her it’s not in their mandate to fund religious music, her quest seems just about impossible.
