Sinopse
Over a period of 50 years the number of farms in Sweden has decreased by over 80 percent. The trend is the same throughout Western Europe.'
‘Sven Quijote’ is ready to fight for upholding traditional farming culture.
Sven Quijote is a film that takes a warm and heartfelt plunge into farming life on the island of Gotland. The film portrays the life, with all its joys and sorrows, of the Sigsarve family over the course of two years.
Life on the farm is not easy: a dry period threatens the harvest, calving does not always go the way it should, and various EU complications are tough to contend with. The future is shrouded in mists of uncertainty, yet faith in a common goal helps the people to keep forging on.
In days gone by, villagers all knew each other and met in the village shop on a daily basis. Today, things are quite different. Nevertheless, although the old foundations of society crumble under the sledgehammer of development, the people are not giving in. The village women’s songs reverberate in the old medieval church, and cow’s are slaughtered at home with the help of neighbours. Sometimes there’s even enough time to brew some genuine Gotland smoky ale, time to fish, play traditional games, go to the beach, swim with babies and time for quiet spiritual reflection in church groups.
Above all, Sven Quijote is an intimate depiction of the everyday life of a farming family that lives in the rugged conditions of the island. The film is a portrayal of mutual caring, strength and coping with day-to-day tasks and, of course, of the spectacular Gotland scenery and nature with its guillemots and steep limestone cliffs.
